Arrest Nupur Sharma for Blasphemy, Not the Protesters – NWF

National Women’s Front takes strong exception to the legal actions against Qasmi, Rana, and the illegal custody of ET Muhammad Basheer, MP from Kerala, in connection with the Kanpur communal unrest.

The Uttar Pradesh police filed an FIR against the editor of the multi-lingual news outlet Millat Times, Shams Tabrez Qasmi under sections 505 and 507 IPC and Section 66 of the IT Act for tweeting videos of communal clashes in Kanpur accusing him of spreading fake news.

The Uttar Pradesh police, instead of initiating legal action against the guilty who triggered communal unrest by hurting the religious feelings of Muslims, are arresting and torturing those who protested the denigrating gibberish of the BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and who reported the unrest in Kanpur.

Unrest erupted in Kanpur following Nupur Sharma’s blasphemous gibberish about the Holy Prophet, on 3rd June and the police registered three FIRs against 55 Muslims on 4th June. Samajwadi Party national spokesperson, Sumaiya Rana was put under house arrest and a heavy police force was deployed outside her residence in the Qaiserbagh, for calling for a protest against Nupur. ET Muhammad Basheer MP from Kerela was taken into custody by the UP police during his visit to Kanpur to console the victims.

National Women’s Front strongly protests the blasphemous remarks of Nupur Sharma about the Holy Prophet, discriminatory actions against Qasmi and Rana and the illegal custody of ET Muhammad Basheer MP. NWF also demands the immediate arrest of Nupur Sharma.
